Yes, there are water sports in the North of Sweden in the winter

Yesterday I managed to do something I’ve been longing to do for a while. I photographed water sports in the north of Sweden in the winter! And what I mean by water sports is swimming in open water outside in -25 degrees celsius. It was wonderful conditions for photography, except for the cold, the sun was out and lots of white snow on the ground so there was lots of light which is always good when you’re taking sport photos. It’s easier to catch all the movement in sports.

It was a beautiful sunny day, but it was cold, very cold. I was dressed in lots of clothes because I knew I had to keep warm for a long time, standing still and taking pictures at the same time. The competition took place outside of the town of SkellefteΓ₯. You can find more information about the competition itself here at Vintersim.

So, I got up, got dressed and took the bus. Oh, a tip about skincare in the arctic region in the winter: don’t wash your face in the morning if you’re heading out into the freezing cold. This is something my father taught me, and he was working in the forests most of his life. Once he was going to cut some trees when it was -44 degrees. But, he changed his mind after a while in the forest and went home.

Anyhow, I got on the bus. Fortunately the communication between the cities along the coast are quite good so I got there in an hour, the E4-road that runs along the coast is a great road and there’s usually not too much traffic. Since I was going to take photos I didn’t want to drive because I get tiered from photographing and taking the bus is better for the environment. I had a nice lunch, and Swedish fika, at Paolos cafΓ© at Wood Hotel in SkellefteΓ₯. The hotel is a famous high rise hotel almost completely made out of wood that has won many international design awards. I’ve stayed at the hotel last new years and it was a wonderful experience.

Anyhow, after lunch I took another bus and ended up in the town of Skelleftehamn close to the famous Northvolt battery factory that makes batteries for electrical cars. And after a short walk, the last part on the frozen water of Bay of Bothnia, I ended up on the competition site where the organizers had cut through the ice and made an outdoor swimming pool. The water was so cold it basically froze between the heats. There were people fishing up the ice from the lanes between the contests. And maybe it was the first time in my life that I didn’t want to jump into the water. But, I was a bit curious. Maybe sometime I’ll have a go at it. Just not when it is -25 celsius in the air. There were some swimmers who had their first go at winter swimming during the competition and I was so impressed by them, they seemed to enjoy their swim. There was also the teams that are the best winter swimmers competing, and they made a memorable experience for the audience. For the first round, the two swimmers of the opposing teams where just swimming along nicely in a slow pace chatting to each other. Next round they were doing some serious swimming competing against each other. And for the third round they were floating on their backs on the lanes. In freezing cold water, literally, at -25 degrees celsius. Most amazing!

I’m so impressed by the athletes. Everybody swam, they might have looked a little spooked during the swim but afterwards they seemed unfazed and some even walked around in their swimsuits. There were many international swimmers too so it’s not just a local thing. I saw swimmers from Latvia, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Germany to name a few. Have a look for yourself at the photos. And if you fancy some winter swimming visit SkellefteΓ₯ next winter!

  3. “It was wonderful conditions for photography, except for the cold, the sun was out and lots of white snow on the ground so there was lots of light which is always good when you’re taking sport photos”

[ME]: That is a great point about how the snow-white conditions and the sunshine, made the lighting really good for photography despite how freezing it was there πŸ₯ΆπŸ˜†πŸ‘. The people who organized the event picked a really good day to host it. Things went marvelously for your photography, the patrons and and the competition overall πŸ™ŒπŸ’™πŸ˜‡.

“I was dressed in lots of clothes because I knew I had to keep warm for a long time, standing still and taking pictures at the same time”

[ME]: Exactly, safety first βœ”οΈβœ”οΈπŸ˜†. It would have been awful if you went to such lengths to get there, only for your stay to be cut short due to safety and health concerns πŸ˜….

“Oh, a tip about skincare in the arctic region in the winter: don’t wash your face in the morning if you’re heading out into the freezing cold. This is something my father taught me, and he was working in the forests most of his life.”

[ME]: That is a vital tip that I have not really heard before πŸ’―. Kudos to your father for teaching you these handy survival tricks so that you can manage yourself whenever you are in these kinds of situations πŸ˜‡πŸ™. It is interesting to see all of the other kinds of issues that cold weather can cause apart from just the general feeling of shivering coldness πŸ‘πŸ˜†πŸ˜„.

“Since I was going to take photos I didn’t want to drive because I get tiered from photographing and taking the bus is better for the environment”

[ME]: That is a really good idea πŸ’‘βœ”οΈ. It would have taken more time and energy to actually drive yourself to the event than to actually be driven there which would have depleted the energy that you would have needed to perform the photography plus keep pace with all of the other things you wanted and needed to do. Traveling by bus being better for the environment is also important to take note of πŸ“ŒπŸ’―πŸ˜„.

“Anyhow, I got on the bus. Fortunately the communication between the cities along the coast are quite good so I got there in an hour, the E4-road that runs along the coast is a great road and there’s usually not too much traffic”

[ME]: These remarks touched on the other side of things too that could be an issue with public transportation, in that, you are at the mercy of whatever decisions are made by the other person who is driving, and you can only hope that they are reasonable, plus the way that things run because of the people who are in charge of the roads and conducting traffic also seriously impacts your travel over long distances and your ability to make it to destinations on time β±οΈπŸ—ΊοΈπŸš‰πŸšŒ.

“I had a nice lunch, and Swedish fika, at Paolos cafΓ© at Wood Hotel in SkellefteΓ₯. The hotel is a famous high rise hotel almost completely made out of wood that has won many international design awards. I’ve stayed at the hotel last new years and it was a wonderful experience.”

[ME]: That’s great πŸ₯°. To do all of that work and to keep up with the events, you have to make sure that you are regulating these energy levels and it looks as though the food you had at that place helped you tremendously well in that area, and it’s lovely that nothing seems to have changed at the hotel since you last visited 🏒☺️🫢.

“And after a short walk, the last part on the frozen water of Bay of Bothnia, I ended up on the competition site where the organizers had cut through the ice and made an outdoor swimming pool”

[ME]: It’s marvelous to see how the day played out leading up to you finally making it at the location of the competition. For me it is revealing that the ice was cut-through to create the swimming lanes; at first I was thinking that the event was at a location where the water was actually not frozen πŸ€πŸ˜‚.

“There were people fishing up the ice from the lanes between the contests. And maybe it was the first time in my life that I didn’t want to jump into the water. But, I was a bit curious. Maybe sometime I’ll have a go at it. Just not when it is -25 celsius in the air.”

[ME]: You didn’t feel like jumping into the water for good reason ⚠️πŸ₯Άβ„οΈπŸŒ¨οΈ; as you noted it was very very cold plus I don’t think you came prepared for that but I understand you being a bit curious — you love water πŸ˜†πŸ˜πŸ’™πŸ’™. I hope you do get to have a go at it sometime to bless your curiosity.

“There were some swimmers who had their first go at winter swimming during the competition and I was so impressed by them, they seemed to enjoy their swim.”

[ME]: That sounds seriously impressive to me too πŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸ†πŸ‘πŸ‘; it’s their first time and they won under lots of pressure and extreme conditions; they must be super proud to see their hard work has paied off and probably still can’t believe it LOL. The best thing is that they enjoyed it βœŒοΈπŸ˜†.

“For the first round, the two swimmers of the opposing teams where just swimming along nicely in a slow pace chatting to each other. Next round they were doing some serious swimming competing against each other”

[ME]: Awesome to hear this πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ; it’s refreshing to see this kind for classic sportsmanship and competitive rivalry among the contestants πŸ‘πŸ˜„πŸ™‚. That is exactly why it was alot of fun and also the reason why the sport may be around for many more years to come 😹🀟.

      5. Hahaha thanks for your weather report πŸ˜ΉπŸ’Œ.

It’s definitely going to be a while until summer arrives, but atleast the Scandinavian Winter Swimming Championships shows that, just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy life, so hopefully you get to do other great things in the meantime πŸ™ŒπŸ˜†πŸ˜†

      6. Oh, yes πŸ™Œ you can enjoy the winter, and between the great outdoors you can enjoy the great indoors too! Also, you have to respect the weather and accept that it’s much better to stay at home, like when it’s very cold -35, then it’s better if you stay inside. Or, if it’s snowing then maybe you should take public transport or stay at home and not go driving. Yesterday, when the snowing started, there were reports of crashes on the E4 involving six cars or something. But, considering we’re up here in the north of Sweden people usually have to travel long distances to work and such so … it’s difficult πŸ™„ and I don’t have the answer πŸ˜‰ but now the temperature is perfect for skiing and lots of newly fallen snow! That’s how it generally is, very cold in January and then the snow comes in February πŸŽΏβ›·οΈ and the skiing season lasts into late April at least. A short winter guide to the north of Sweden!

      7. Thank you for this beautiful response πŸ’•πŸ’•. You struck the nail on the head all of those points and gave some essential tips and advice as it concerns cold weather and what are the most ideal approaches depending on the situation πŸ‘πŸ’―πŸ’―. If it’s really cold and snowing like sub 30 – 35 degrees and below, staying at home would probably be a no-brainer and public transport should be considered if it’s snowing, granted, accidents can still happen on public transport, but they may still be a better option to utilize over using your own vehicle in these conditions πŸŒ¨οΈβ„οΈπŸšˆπŸšŒπŸ˜†πŸ˜ƒ.

The crashes on the E4 is unfortunate and hopefully there is no serious injuries or even death form that incident — it is for sure a reminder of how difficult things are. It’s great to know that there is not strictly worry about the bad possibilities and that skiing can take place because of the newly fallen snow and the perfect temperatures β›·οΈπŸ‚β›ΈοΈ.

I loved your winter guide for the north of Sweden πŸ™ŒπŸ˜ΉπŸŒΉπŸ’™.

You are welcome πŸ™β˜ΊοΈ. When you say it takes a while to get use to, do you man the different adjustments and measures that can be taken to deal with the snow and cold temperatures?, if so, I completely get where you are coming from πŸ’―πŸ‘πŸ˜„

        Like

      10. Yes! It just takes time to adjust to a long cold winter πŸ˜‰ at least since I’ve spent many winters in warm climates so to stay up here and experience how long our winters are takes some time to adjust to 😹

      11. Great point πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜„, granted, I personally live in a tropical environment which is mostly sunshine or rain for 365 days a year and I have never actually experienced winter, or very long winters at that LOL.

But, to your main point, someone such as yourself who travels alot to place with mostly warm environments, if you now have to stay in cold places for long periods subsequent to frequenting some of these warm areas, it will take some time to adjust to, along with the fact that different people cope with coldness differently πŸ’―πŸ˜Ή

    1. So, was I. But still curious. When the pandemic was going on I started swimming outdoors but then it might have been 16 degrees in the water, and still my foot soles where numb when I got out of the water. I’ve heard reports that swimming in cold water doesn’t have the claimed health benefits as it has been reported, but in my opinion, cold water swimming does you good!

    1. Thanks πŸ™ but the most impressive is the swimmers! It usually is a bit warmer here during the winter but we’ve had a cold spell this winter, below -20 for weeks. This day was a taste of pre-spring winter but with winter temperatures. We sort of have eight seasons up here in the north, and with the weather this weekend we might have nine seasons, pre-pre-spring winter πŸ˜‰
