Sagres

Yes, I’ve been in Portugal. That’s why I’ve been M.I.A. again. And, I’ve moved back up north so that has taken up a lot of my time as swell. But, I think I’ve said this before, I might be in one place physically but still, when looking at, and working on my photos I’m in all of those places at the same time. I can feel the smells, the salty air that blows in my face, the feeling of warm water against my body and everything else the moments the photos capture.

So, I don’t think I’ll write much more. I just put up some of my photos. With captions, that might be a bit long but also, descriptive. Oh, but wait. Since I’m back at my house I can finally edit my photos on a larger screen. They might not get better by it but I love seeing them on a big screen and that takes me back even better. I just edited these from Amed, East Bali.

Another very special thing with me visiting both Sagres and Amed is that they are considered to be very important and special places. In Balinese culture Amed is sometimes called The Axis of the Universe and Sagres is a place where the Gods were thought to meet, and I’ve been to both in a couple of months. Imagine that. Not that I planned my visits because of those facts, I just wanted to go snorkelling in Amed and to do some swimming in cold waters in Sagres. And, of course, since Sagres is one of the best surf spots in Portugal I wanted to take some surf photos. But you never know with surf photos … they’re dependent on waves and surfers. But I got lucky.

And Sagres, like all of the places along the Portuguese coastline is also one of the most amazing and beautiful places I’ve visited. It’s hard big rocks just dropping into the sea, with nice sandy beaches close by.

Just waling around on those cliffs was the best feeling and there’s a fortress to visit too. Maybe the most fascinating thing on those cliffs are the fishermen. Of course there’s fishermen in this post too. It’s made by me so naturally I would include them. And, Sagres is an old fishing town so they have to be part of my post. They are standing so close to the edge on the high cliffs with long lines from their fishing rods down towards the water.

And since there are fish, there are also cats. And they are taken care of so well even if they are wild cats. Or, I mean, they are living outside and some of them are a bit cautious of humans, but most of them are very friendly and usually not hiding at all. The story I heard, was that the fishermen in the port were having trouble with mice eating their catch but then they discovered that there were cats catching and eating the mice so then, the cats were welcomed and taken good care of. Even to this day. And I love places with many cats, well, because I love cats.

So yes, I enjoyed my time in Sagres a lot. Stayed in a great apartment which I think most of the ones in Portugal are. The standard is amazing. But now, I’m back in my house in the north. The snow hasn’t started to fall yet but soon it will, and the lakes and rivers will freeze so you can ski and go snow scootering on them. And I really long for the snow, not the shovelling, but since the days are getting shorter the snow adds so much light.

And looking back on this post … I didn’t just put up my photos, it’s sort of a mini tourist guide to Sagres, from my viewpoint that is. Of course I’ve could have done a proper guide with hotels, restaurants and such but I think that’s something it’s easy and fun to discover by yourself while travelling and not have everything mapped out before you go.
