Life Framers competition “Humans”

I’ve participated in a photo contest again, this time it’s Life Framers contest “Humans”. It’s a subject that’s very dear to me since that’s almost everything I photograph, people and their emotions.

One morning in Sagres, Portugal. I don’t remember if I already had my camera out, to capture the sunrise, or if I got it out when I saw the girl. Anyway, I was staying in a room with the most beautiful view. From my balcony I could see the southern most point of both Portugal and Europe. It used to be called End of the World since in ancient times it was the furthest explored point and that was the name the Romans gave it. That’s the place you can see in the photo as a back drop to the girl taking selfies in front of it.

It felt as I was spying on the girl with my camera. Even if she was standing in public view while she took the photos with her phone. I don’t know if she sent it to someone or if she was going to use them in another way, but the relationship she, and almost everyone of us, have with our phones are sort of private even if we use them in public. You can see how she looks down into her phone after she took the photos. Is she checking how the photos turned out, or is she already waiting for a reaction from someone. Our attention are almost all of the time turned into our phones when we are out in public, or nature. We are almost never fully present in the moment any more.

It’s also a bit ironic, she’s sitting there in front of one of the most amazing views in the world, but her attention is turned to her phone. The same goes for me, I was standing on my balcony but my attention was turned into my camera, and how I could portray the girl on the cliff. There are so many distractions nowadays, but ultimately I think we are still trying to communicate with each other, but the way we do it has changed. At least, that’s my intention with my photography, I want to communicate with the world and share how I see the world. And it’s still a beautiful world.
