Feeling the warm sun against my skin

Seagull flying over the cliffs in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, February 2023

I was able to capture the seagull flying over the birds on the cliffs in Las Palmas with my iPhone. That’s pretty amazing since I named one of my old phones “This is not a camera”.

Just a short hello from me, and this time it has to be short since I’ve got so much to do, and are not doing as much as I was hoping to do. Since, there are other stuff I have to tend to too. Quite cryptic, I know. It’s just that I’m finalising my plans.

So I’m on a short break in Gran Canaria just to get some sun on my skin, hopefully go swimming since I love swimming in cooler waters too. And it doesn’t seem to be too cold, I saw lots of people swimming while I was looking for a hotel today. Of course, it’s really nice not having to shovel show for a couple of days. Been doing lots of shovelling the week before I left, 240 cubic meters in less than three days. Just my luck it’s not snowing now.

Grafitti on a wall in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, February 2023

Grafitti. And I’m not sure who it is. It could be Martin Luther King. On the other hand, it could be Dr Dre too. Or, somebody else. Anyhow, it’s beautiful.

These are just a few snaps, or as some people seem to call them ‘clicks’, I took with my iPhone while out on a nice morning walk the other day. Sometimes the phone surprise me with what it can do. Like capturing a bird in flight. So use your phone for photos too, at least you have a memory of how you saw the world. But, you have to edit the photos from the phone, and proper cameras too. It’s so rare that the phone, or camera, capture a good looking image where the white balance and everything is correct. Because that’s how a camera lens works, it translates the image captured to a perfect mix of grey. So, this “No filter” that people write on some of their photos, that’s just pure luck, and a bit of nonsense. But that’s just my opinion. As usual.

It’s beautiful to see open water again, great to feel the sea breeze and to get some sun on my skin. It’s been so long now I had almost forgotten what it feels like. I’ve got bare feet too.

    • Thanks! Blue is my colour, although I like them all. And, I was hoping to finish some work here like setting up my web shop so hope I can do just that.

    • Oh, is it your home island?!! It’s beautiful, hope I can take some more photos. Which places do you think are the most special, and also, where’s the best swimming on the island? Cheers 😄

      • The island offers a lot of variety to go to a beach. I would highlight the Maspalomas dunes in the area near the lighthouse. That section is interesting. The nudist area is interesting too. There are many smaller beaches that you may also like, but you have to take the car and move more. I prefer the North. I like Agaete, Gáldar, Playa del Risco, Veneguera. I flee from mass tourism. Anyway, it’s a good season now. There is a very interesting Windsurfing beach in Pozo Izquierdo, near the airport. The wind is very strong there. In the north are the surf areas. The cicer, the confital, San Felipe. All this is surf zone. You can also eat good fresh fish. The port of Agaete is a good place to eat fresh fish from the area. Well, there are very good fresh fish in all the island.

      • Gracias 🙏 it’s so good to get recommendations from a local, especially one who likes water. It’s a beautiful morning here. I like Las Palomas too, so close to the nature and sea. And, El Confital 🌊 is looking good today.

  1. Wonderful post with beautiful photos. Yes, I stored my other cameras and use my old cell phone for photos and edits. Good fun! 🤩😍💕✨Have fun!

    • Thanks 🙏 I would never give up my proper cameras tho. Because they’re so much better. But, I usually do test shoots with my phone and later recreate them with my camera 📷

  2. Feeling the warm sun on your lovely skin verses the freezing cold, no to mention not having to shovel snow for now, must be nothing short of gratifying 🙌🙌💙🌹. I also loved hearing about what you know concerning how the camera lenses work, plus the color balancing and color correcting issues that often affects the raw photos and images that are taken spontaneously with phones and cameras.

“It could be Martin Luther King. On the other hand, it could be Dr Dre too. Or, somebody else. Anyhow, it’s beautiful.”

🤣🤣🤣 I get your point but that was pretty funny. It could actually be me for all we know 🥸🤭

“I’ve got bare feet too” <— sight to behold 😲😂

This was a beautiful hello and I am glad to see you again 👍👍😆. Continue to enjoy your short break in Gran Canaria (if you are still there since I am commenting on this kind of "late" lol).

    • Hi! Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I’m still in Gran Canaria for a couple of more days. Enjoying not shovelling snow and a bit of summer. And of course, being in Spain a country I’ve visited on the mainland so many times. Although this is closer to a lot of other countries it has a lot of the Spanish culture I know and love. Sitting at an outside café working now. Just had a café con leche and a pastel de nata, which I know from Portugal. Cheers!

      • Hahaha that rocks. It’s so cool that you don’t have to work in a typical office setting day-in and day-out 👍😆.

The place that you are at sounds awesome 🏖🌊😄💯. So much to do and see that it’s certainly a place that you can’t visit just once 🚗🚂✈.

Cheers to you too and you’re welcome, I LOVE stopping by 🙌🤩🤩

      • Gran Canaria is a great island in many ways! And, Las Palmas is a beautiful city. There’s also a long Carnival going on here so you see the most amazing costumes on the street daily. Especially today since it’s the big Carnival Day today 🙂

  3. You know, I have taken some very good photos with my phone and have never filtered or edited anything.

Usually if a shot I take does not come out to my liking I just retake the photo until I get it right then delete what I do not want.

Also, I like your photos and explorations that you share on your blog. Very nice and interesting.

    • Yes, the phone takes good photos. It’s just if you want details in a photo my phone is not that good, especially at long distances and not really good with action photos either. But I’m spoiled with my camera, because it takes amazing photos 🙌 What kind of phone do you have? Guess there are some better ones out there 😉

      • Oh, I’ve been looking in that direction 😉 it’s just when I’m so stuck in the apple tree it’s difficult to switch 😉

      • Of course! When you are used to something that you become familiar with or that is your favorite it may cause one to be hesitant to make that change.

        The situation is completely understandable!

If you ever do switch you will do it when you are ready! 😻❤

      • That is the same thing with me. I purchased a brand new cellphone/smartphone last summer and still have not opened it and used it yet because I have a lot of files to transfer too!

But the phone I currently use is still working fine so I will enjoy it while it last!❤

      • That’s good, because really, I don’t need a new phone and so many people are chasing to buy the newest phone even if their phone is working fine. That’s actually a good thing with Apple since they release updates to so many older models so that you don’t need to buy a new phone just to be able to use it. I’ve still got a 20 year old MacBook that works, it’s just that the software is not functioning nor is the internet. But it starts and works 😹

      • I totally agree!

I do not keep purchasing the latest technology just because a newer version comes out. Why waste money for nothing?

I like to use my items until they wear out or nolonger work!

I was still using my desktop Dell Windows computer that was purchased in 2005. I only stopped using it because the screen conked out in the year 2017 or 2018 I think it was. That computer lasted a long time and I loved it!

      • And, I have no idea if I’m giving you multiple replies since my computer, or if it’s WP, that’s acting strange. Sorry if so ☺️

  4. Helena this is an amazing article and i really like your collection of pictures and one more think blue is my favorite color

    • Thanks 🙏 yes, there are so many beautiful things that are blue. Like the sky and the sea. More will follow from my visit here in Gran Canaria, so .. stay tuned 😉

Wow, such a festive time indeed 🎷🎼💃🎉🎈🎭. I am happy that you were there to see it 😍😍.

Where I come from (the Caribbean) every year we have carnivals and fetes and festivals with costumes, masqueraders, revelers and all that good fun stuff too 👏👏🤣, but it’s good to know what’s going on elsewhere especially from someone who travels alot and especially in place that I didn’t know about until I learned about them through your blog 👍😂

    • Oh, that Carnival is still going strong! Fireworks tonight and yesterday the Carnival parade went on for at least four hours. Took lots of photos 😉 so now they’re in my pipeline too.

      • Hahaha, whoa!. You couldn’t get a better indication of how super an event is than when fireworks start to go off 🎆🎇🎊😄.

I am also excited to hear about the pictures in your pipeline 🖼📸😆. It will be interesting if or when you share them to actually see and learn about the occasion in a way that can only be told through pictures 💙✌️😮

Great catching up with you. Thanks for your patience lol

      • Great catching up with you too! Have to stop by your page too, it’s just it’s a lot going on as always 😉 sitting at the airport now 🛫

Awwwww, that is no problem at all my friend 💕😆🙂. You are always welcome there at anytime 👍😄🤗. I understand your circumstances and I wish you a safe trip 🛫💙🤟☺️

    • Thanks 🙏 soon I’ll land in -15 degrees Celsius, which now seems as strange as 15-20 degrees felt while I was packing. It’s going to be cold. Hope my car starts 🤞🚙💨

      • 🤣🤣 yes I hope your car starts because that is seriously cold weather lol. My fingers are crossed too 🤞🥰

      • Yes 🙄 -15 and the dark, that’s what’s waiting. But also, snow and the nicest part of the winter, or spring-winter as we call it ⛷️

  7. “Yes 🙄 -15 and the dark, that’s what’s waiting. But also, snow and the nicest part of the winter, or spring-winter as we call it ⛷️”

Interesting. You think the nicest part about spring-winter is Skiing?

Yup, the cold and the dark are certainly not anything to look forward to 😅😅.

      • “I think the nicest thing about spring-winter is spring-winter 😉 it’s so nice and beautiful then, no matter what you do.”

“Just illustrated it with an emoji of things you can do during spring winter 😉”
        ———-

I agree, I view it the same way as well 👍😄. It’s just that we all have “favorite” things to do and I was intrigued when you used the sky emoji thinking that perhaps it was one of your favorite things about the season. But it is a lovely time all around and can even be quite magical to use your word ❄🗻🛷⛸😂

      • Haha that’s really cool 👍💯🤩. Cheers and have fun this spring-winter but be safe <3🌹

    • Sì, piacciono anche a me. Ma forse per un altro motivo. mi piace che quello più vicino al mio telefono lo guardi e si chieda cosa sta succedendo. Oppure, questa è la mia interpretazione dell’espressione dell’uccello 😉
