It’s Sámi National day today. It’s celebrated in memory of the first Sámi conference that was held in 1917. The Sámi are the original inhabitants of the north of Norway, Sweden and Finland, Sápmi as the country is originally called. The Sámi are traditionally a nomadic people that travelled with the reindeer herds in the north. You should really look up Sámi culture on the internet, or in real life. I just wanted to acknowledge the day and the importance of Sámi. I’m not Sámi but since my family owned reindeer I feel close to Sámi people since we share common interest and I love the north of Sweden above the Arctic Circle. This is a photo I took in Björkliden close to the Norwegian border a little bit after midsummer when there’s daylight all through the night. And the lake in the photo is Torneträsk which is the origin of the river, Torneå River, that I grew up next to. So, Happy Sámi National Day!

    • Örnsköldsvik is a beautiful place! Visited the city two summers ago and went to Skuleskogen too, such a beautiful forest. And, love the Högakusten bridge. I always drive as slow as I can when crossing that bridge so I get a good view of the river and surroundings.

You have shared quite the history about Sámi International Day; this is actually the first time I am hearing about it haha. But I love seeing what it means to you and Happy Sámi National Day to you also 👍👍😆

    • Thank you! And, the Sámi history is important to the north of Sweden and has been pushed away for centuries. So, I’m happy to spread the word internationally.

But it seems like it’s actually Sámi National day but you made this post to bring attention to it internationally, which is very cool so thanks for sharing 💙💙💙.

    • Thank you 🙏 I think I might have some Sámi in me but I just wanted to highlight the Sámi National Day. When I grew up there was always reindeer around which is a central part for the Sámi people. And, their culture and work, like taking care of the reindeer, has not been taken into consideration when mines have opened and forests have been cut down. So, it’s an important day as is the Sámi people.

    And yes, I tried not to confuse you with the Sami 😆👍. Sami is part of Swedish culture and you are Swedish so I meant it was interesting to learn more about the Swedish culture [overall] from your perspective 💯🙌😄
